Wallpaper Steamer Stripping Technique: This technique works on the following principle: a kettle sends steam to a plate of distribution along a crack. The steam is pushed through to dissolve the adhesive by holding the paper for some seconds. The paper then becomes easy to strip. Care should be taken that the steam does not work on a particular area for long as it may blow up the upper plaster-layer.
Also, be careful as steam can cause burns. Ensure adequate ventilation in the room if you work using a steamer. Too much steam in the room could possibly soften the ceiling plaster if it is in bad condition to an extent that it might fall.
Make sure you scrape off the paper using a stripping knife that is specially designed for this purpose. Never make use of a filling knife because it will gouge and flex the surface.
The knife needs to be held tilted at some angle that is only enough to go under the wallpaper and not sufficient to make depressions in the wall.
By stroking the knife back and forth once the knife is under the wallpaper, you could scrape it along. The angle should be maintained throughout for the knife would just come our through the paper if the angle becomes shallow. The best way is working upwards. Working downwards is more tedious and hard to control.
Once you are done stripping the wallpaper, take a good look at the wall surface. Once the surface dries up, it can be smoothened using a light sandpaper. If your house is old, then there are chances that the surface maybe powdery or chalky. This is mostly distemper.
Once the stripping work is complete, the stripped paper should be cleaned because if the adhesive dries up, it will stick just as strongly as it did earlier.
