Having owned a hardwood flooring company for many years I am extremely partial to Oak and other hardwood flooring. It is one of the most durable and repairable floor coverings you could ever own. Oak that is milled for flooring generally comes from the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States. Oak-flooring is extremely versatile and comes in several different widths and lengths.
They also come in different types of grains. These grain structures are separated into groups called grades. These grades are Clear, Select, #1 Common and #2 Common. Clear being the type that has very little grain structure with light color and #2 Common having extreme grain structure with many knots, rough character and shorter lengths. Many people seemed to prefer the #1 Common because it has the most character. The beauty of Oak flooring is that it takes to stain very well and it can also be absolutely beautiful finished natural. One thing that many people don’t realize is that when you install finished-in-place hardwood flooring (not pre-finished hardwood flooring) in your home, it actually adds value to your home.
Often by simply putting hardwood floor in they main living parts of the home, it can increase the home value up to ten thousand dollars. So it’s more than just a floor covering, it’s an investment. A really wonderful thing about hardwood flooring is that once it’s been worn or damaged, it can be refinished. An average sized living room and dining room that is being refinished will produce several 30 gallon garbage bags worth of fine sawdust. When you sand down a hardwood floor it must be taken down to bare wood. Which means removing all the stain, finish and any damage. That means several layers which creates a whole lot of dust. Overall, you cannot go wrong in choosing a hardwood floor covering. Not only are they durable, they are beautiful. It is the one floor covering that you can custom choose for yourself. You get to decide the color, grade and lengths you want. That makes it very unique.
